Cuffs representation exam Q1

Analyse how representation is used in the episode to create meaning for a mainstream pre- watershed audience. Refer to the text you have studied in your answer (5 marks).

In the episode the character Jake, is represented as a privileged character in terms of his work. In the beginning of the extract Jake is seen to be introduced to his job by his fatherthe super intendant. Unlike the other officers Jake did not work for his place on the force and his colleagues don't believe he belongs on the team. Later during the extract Jake tells Ryan “i’m gay”, Ryan does not give any reaction to him. Stereotypically Gay men are seen as being very feminine however the character representation of Jake is a countertype as he is portrayed as masculine and has a well built physique. The show is shown at 8pm which is pre watershed implying it is suitable for both adults and children. This creates meaning for a mainstream British audience because Jakes sexuality is much more accepted now days and teaches children to be more accepting of other sexualities.
