Luther textual analysis
In the extract shown, many elements of mice-en-scene were used. As the propp theory suggests the villain character was wearing all black clothing, which may indicate to us that he was trying to blend in with the crowd and not draw attention to himself. The colour black is often connoted as evil and darkness which may reflect on the actions he has done or is about to commit. The villain was also wearing sunglasses reinforcing to us that he is trying to disguise himself making him less easy to identify. White men are often seen as the superior race and may be seen as the hero however in the extract shown the stereotype of a white man was challenged as he is seen as the villain not the hero. These three points would leave the audience wanting to know why the villain is trying to hide himself and what he has done.
The extract was set in an ally way which are often hidden away from people and busy streets where lots of people would have been able to see them. The fact that it was set in the day contradicts the connotations of a crime for example, taking place at night where there would not be many witnesses. The audience may feel confused by this as criminals are often illustrated as clever and deceiving, and doing an act of crime in the middle of the day its not very sly.
In accordance to the propp theory Luther is shown as the hero in the extract. This challenges the representation of people from African American descent, who are stereotypically shown as criminals. The fact that Luther himself was also wearing black clothes a hat and sunglasses may also suggest that he was committing a crime and was in disguise going undercover. As a whole the audience may feel torn on how they feel about Luther seeing as the extract portrays him as quite violent but we know he is the hero.
You have completed an excellent first analysis Lola, well done! You have used the correct terminology, considered the effect on the audience and explained how the mise-en-scene has created meaning.
ReplyDeleteWhen reflecting and perfecting, please put these changes in a green font colour.
Reflect and Perfect:
- Check over your work for SPaG - The theorist we learnt about was called Propp.
- Explain what the representations are of white men and if the extract challenges/adheres to them.
